Spartan
Health Club paid tribute to its 2 most famous members today. (Friday
Jan. 30) West Indies Cricket Captain Chris Gayle, the world’s #1
rated ODI batsman and sprint sensation Usain Bolt, triple Olympic
gold medalist and world record holder for the 100 and 200 meters
were presented with congratulatory plaques by Carmen Lynch, Senior
Supervisor Administration at Spartan.
Coach Glen Mills of Racers Track Club and Chris Gayle were then
presented with cheques for $100,000.00 each by Spartan’s Managing
Director, Mickey Haughton-James. Racers Track Club - the club to
which Usain Bolt belongs – will use their donation for an ongoing
development program at Racers Track Club, while the cheque presented
to Chris Gayle is to be used for the development of cricket in an
area to be identified by the West Indies cricket Captain.
In a statement to the media after the presentations Haughton-James
said the Club’s relationship with National Sporting Associations
started in the 1970’s when cricketer Michael Holding introduced
Courtney Walsh, then a schoolboy at Excelsior High School, to the
Club. He stated that most of the island’s top athletes had, at some
time, trained at Spartan. The list includes cyclists David Weller
and Ricardo Lynch, athletes Raymond Stewart, Gillian Russell, Aileen
Bailey and Bridgette Foster-Hylton and footballer Fabian Davis.
Presently the Jamaica Netball Team, the Jamaica Cricket Team and
Glen Mills Racers Track Club as well as several individual National
Representative Athletes receive access to Spartan’s facilities for
their strength training program.
The event was attended by members of the media and by Spartan
members
